2. Song
This boutique (whose name means "life" in Vietnamese) carries original designs offering a modern twist on classic Vietnamese styles. They are a bit on the pricey side, but the clothing is thoughtful and well-cut. Everything is a creation of established designer Valerie Gregori McKenzie, who first began designing in France and continued her trade in California. Her clothing and home collections are a mix of Vietnamese classical styles and a tropical boehmian chic look.

3. Thing of Substance
An excellent place to find original designs and all reasonably priced. The store has a lovely sense of humor, as evidenced by their motto: "Western sizes ? Vietnamese prices ?" and their small selection of souvenir T-shirts (Vietnam, One Party since 1975). Things of Substanace sells mostly womens' cotton and linen separates with a touch of eastern influence -- the type of clothing that is perfect for the hot weather and could transfer easily to an office setting. They also have a small handful of funky accessories, like canvas yoga bags embroidered with a big dragon or boho-style leather shoulder bags made of pigskin.

5. Velvet Underground
This store carries an adorable selection of cotton summer frocks for children. They also have a fine selection of quality bed linens and other household knickknacks. One of my favorite pieces is a bucket bag made of traditional embroidered silk encased in clear plastic -- a perefectly stylish (and original) beach bag.
