“We had lunch on the Mekong Delta at Le Longanier. This restaurant seems to be newly built in the French colonial style. Here was our menu:
Fried whole fish from the Mekong delta (which you wrap in rice paper and dip in nuoc cham)
Pork stir-fried with vegetables
Fried rice served in a half pineapple
Everything was nice, but the cha gio is the standout. The most fascinating part for me is that it seems the rice paper used to wrap the contents of the egg rolls was so fresh that the wrapper had a texture I had never experienced before. Those of you familiar with Vietnamese egg rolls know that the rice paper has a chewy texture to it. I don’t know what these guys used, but the egg roll wrapper had no chewiness at all. It was light and crunchy the whole way through”.
